Puerto Mogan: Jewel of the CanariesThe Painted Fishing Boats: Colouring Puerto de Mogan,Gran Canaria
The local fishermen in their painted boats add a vibrant dash of colour to the marina of Puerto de Mogán as they unload their daily catch of fresh fish.
One of Gran Canaria’s most attractive marinas, Puerto de Mogán, was constructed in the late eighties and as well as being a local fishing port, has developed over the last two decades into a tranquil mooring spot for luxury yachts from all over the world. The original streets of the old village still twist high up into the facing cliffs, where there is a stupendous viewpoint that looks out over the vast Atlantic Ocean for those capable of the climb. Club De MarAround the marina was created a complex of unique holiday apartments called Club de Mar, their very distinctive Mediterranean style gives Puerto de Mogán its unique, picturesque quality. The small, two storied apartments are abundantly adorned with colourful trailing plants, making this one of the most attractive and colourful areas in the south of Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria’s most Constant ClimateBecause of its geographical position Puerto de Mogán maintains a constant climate; with a yearly average of three hundred and forty days of sunshine, and minimum temperatures of around twenty two degrees Celsius. Puerto de Mogán’s Painted Fishing BoatsThe marina of Puerto de Mogán is flamboyantly characterised by the numerous painted boats of the local fishermen. Unloading their catches daily, they sell the freshly caught fish to the many restaurants that line the harbour front. Fresh Fish and `Mojo Canario´The local gastronomy of this area is based on the treasures that are reaped from the Atlantic, and is one of the few places in the south of Gran Canaria where a decent variety of fresh fish is readily obtainable on the restaurant menus. Normally served in a simple Canarian style; the fish is plainly grilled and accompanied with a traditional green sauce called `mojo´ that is made from a blend of green peppers, garlic, oil and parsley. Underwater ExploringThe waters outside of this tranquil harbour have recently been designated a marine reserve and are popular for diving because of their calm, transparent depths; with the existence of old shipwrecks just off the coast and the natural volcanic seabed, the marine life is varied and plentiful. If diving is too adventurous; for the less intrepid there’s a more sedate outing in a Yellow Submarine which will take you to the depths of the ocean without getting your feet wet. Getting to Puerto de MoganThe regular coastal ferry services that leaves from Puerto Rico is a relaxing and economical way of arriving at Puerto de Mogán; the short half an hour sailing gives a unique view of this areas particularly distinctive rugged coastline, with its many small, hidden coves and beaches. Sophisticated Nights in the Terrace BarsPuerto de Mogán in the evenings is a place to stroll; or relax in the comfortable chairs of an open air terrace bar while slowly sipping an elegant cocktail as the sun sets in blazing glory over the wide blue horizon. One of the most popular spots is the Marina Bar, which overlooks the yacht harbour, and who also host the local jazz festival which gives Puerto Mogán a truly cosmopolitan air.
