Puerto Rico, the small holiday resort on the west coast of Gran Canaria, has twin harbours offering the best in leisure cruise activities from catamarans to tall ships.

The Best Resort for Families

Tucked into Gran Canaria’s coast line is the cove that shelters the urbanisation called Puerto Rico. As with many of the resorts constructed on the island it was designed specifically for the tourist trade, the hotels and apartments arose on the cliffs of barren rock in the early seventies and Puerto Rico has been a popular family resort ever since.

Puerto Rico´s Twin Harbours

One of it’s most attractive features are the twin harbours at the mouth of the cove, with both the marinas offering an incredible choice of leisure cruises or sport fishing trips on a great variety of different boats. The half hour ferry service that runs regularly to the neighbouring resort of Puerto de Mogán is the shortest, while the lengthier full day outings tend to sail for about five hours.

Choosing a Day Cruise

Most of the day cruises are basically the same in the type of onboard activities, such as jet skis and parasailing, that they offer though prices can vary greatly. Strolling around the harbours to compare prices is a good option, the best time is early evening when the boats have docked from their daily trips and it’s possible to assess each one individually for their comfort factor before deciding which to book.

A Day Out on a Catamaran or on a Galleon?

In the harbour called Puerto Base two of the most unusual boats can be found. Gran Canaria’s one remaining sailing galleon, the Timanfaya, is a brilliant choice if you want to heave ho and hoist the sails and also very popular with the younger generation as there is plenty of space onboard to run around. The Super Cat, Europe’s biggest catamaran, is moored right next to the galleon Timanfaya, and offers a unique sailing day out with an onboard Jacuzzi thrown in for the passengers.

Searching for Dolphins

The Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Gran Canaria is teeming with the worlds favourite mammals and in Puerto Rico´s marinas there are many specialised boats that sail frequently throughout the day for a two hour trip that is loaded with a high expectancy of multiple sightings. The longest established and best reputed is the Spirit of the Sea who sail three times daily and have a bus service to collect their guests from out lying resorts.

Sun Care on the Water

The sun is strong in the Canaries and the reflection from the sea while out on a day cruise intensify the rays even more. Always take adequate protecting creams of a higher factor than you would normally use and take extra special care with the children. The Canarian produced Aloe Vera range is excellent for aftersun care especially for sensitive skins.
