The most popular and fastest growing sport in the Canary Islands is golf. Gran Canaria has the best all year round climate of any golfing destination in Europe.

Golf is one of the mainstays of the holiday industry in Gran Canaria, and over the last few years the south of the island has opened some fantastic new, international class courses. The most convenient for combining a sunshine break with a quick round or two are the courses in Maspalomas and Salobre. If cooler weather improves the game, then there are four excellent golf camps in the north of the island, on the outskirts of Las Palmas, the island's capital city.

Maspalomas Golf

Right along side the beautiful and luxurious hotels in the resort of Maspalomas, is the huge golf course that borders the massive dunes formation, which could possibly be classed as one of the biggest golfing bunkers anywhere in the world. For the serious golfer, the MaspalomasGolf Course is an eighteen hole, par 73, and with all the attributes of a well established course.

New Course in Melenaras

Already gaining recognition amongst golfing fanatics, as being a course to test the skills of even the heartiest player, this suberb eighteen holer has enough fantastic views to keep even the least ardent golfing wife happy as she tags along as caddy. Splicing your swing in the wrong direction here, could mean going for a swim to recover the ball, as four of the holes are right on the coastline.

Salobre Golf Resort

Hidden away from view in a secluded ravine just outside of Puerto Rico, Salobre Golf Resort is possibly one of the better courses to play in the winter months in Gran Canaria. During the summer months, its natural geographic location, make it into a suntrap with very high temperatures, so playing then could turn a round into a lizard rock-basking session. The cooler temperatures from November through until April are preferable, and its closeness to the economic resort of Puerto Rico make it quite an afordable break. If something a bit more upmarket is required, then overlooking the course is the new Sheraton Golf Hotel, which has all luxuries on offer to help you over come the effects of the day's hard round.

Las Palmas Golf Courses

The climate in the north of Gran Canaria is ideal for playing golf; the lower temperatures and higher rainfall thoughout the year guarantee a good green. The golf courses situated around Las Palmas, the capital city, are the oldest and longest established on the island. The Club Real de Golf has been open for play since the year 1891, and is considered to be the most prestigious on the island. It has it's own high class hotel that overlooks the beautiful, sloping course.
