» franfolsom - Athens: Touring the Acropolis
I've never been to Greece but after reading your article I'm ready to pack my bags and hop on a plane. When I do go I would like to spend some time walking around the Acropolis. Is that possible?-- posted by franfolsom

Yes, and it's definitely the way to appreciate it. Even if you begin with a tour -- not a bad thing to do, since you'll get a lot of the history that way -- it's good to just wander around an absorb it all on your own.

I'm reading a book called The Three Junes, it starts off in Santorini, which sounds wonderful. Have you ever visited Naxos? Or tasted kafess tou pahgoo (Greek ice coffee)?-- posted by franfolsom

I've not been to Naxos, but I have been to Santorini, and I've had the iced coffee. Santorini is heavily touristed, but I'd advise anyone to go there. The physical appearance of it is fantastic -- the harbor is a huge collapsed crater and the town sits along the rim, looking down (straight down) into it. There is a fascinating archaeological site you can visit there, too.

I had heard that Santorini is a tourist mecca. When I do go to Greece I would like to visit Naxos as I hear it is truly a special island.
