» franfolsom - Cheap Places in Rome and Bologna
The last time I was in Rome I stayed in expensive, fancy hotels. On my next trip, hopefully next year, I would like to stay in small pensions or bed & breakfasts. Myabe you could write about alternative, inexpensive places to stay and eat in Rome, one of the world's most expensive cities.I would also like to visit Bologna for its food, and stay in a B&B there. Also, can you write about where someone could go to learn how to make fresh tortellini and see how they cure the hams? I'm told Bologna is famous for this dish.

Are there any inexpensive places to visit in the lakes region of Italy? The only ones I know of are expensive, such as Villa d'Este. How about in Switzerland, can one vacation cheaply there?-- posted by franfolsom

For some tips that will work in any city, see the blog on eating cheaply in Italy. A quick tip for lodging: consider staying in a suburban commuter town with good local transport to the city center. Rates will be cheaper, and so will nearby restaurant prices.

- Cheap Places in Italy's Lakes
Some lakes are pricier than others. Como and Lugano are more expensive than Garda and Maggiore (see the series of articles on Lake Garda for some suggestions). Lake Iseo is frequented by Italians, with few foreign tourists, which helps keep prices lower. Instead of lakeside hotels, look for smaller lodgings a few streets away. When visiting the Swiss lakes of Lugano and northern Maggiore, consider staying in Bellinzona, on a direct train line to Lugano, or in one of the little towns around the lake.
