You've heard right. Madeira's inland is wild, mountainous and covered in lush green forests. Driving can be terrifying, but walking the levadas is a pleasure.

My favorite parts of mainland Portugal are the northern mountains and the castelated towns along the eastern border. If you like prehistoric sites, the region around Evora is filled with them.
