Southern Europes offers so much to see and do. Here's some things that are not to be missed. Walk the levadas in Madeira, Portugal. These terraces terrains climb along mountains. Some are only a foot path, some are wider, most offer fantastic views down into valleys and vineyards.
See Bologna and die happy. This fantastic city, which I like better than Rome, has drop dead gorgeous architecture and history and, the best food in all of Italy. Ravenna, an easy side trip from Bologna, is world famous for its mosaics which vertually cover most buildings in the town.
Palermo, yes it's noisy and touristy, but this is the heart of Sicily. Its beautiful location hugging the sea makes it a must stop. Some great daytrip alternatives are Monreale, perched high on a cliff overlooking the water, famous for its flowers and cathedral. Trapani, where half of Europe's salt comes from, and Marsala, great beaches and even greater wine.

Delphi! How could I have forgotten Delphi? To the Ancient Greeks Delphi was the centre of the universe, and anyone who has ever stood there and looked out over what I think is the largest olive grove in Greece - thousands upon thousands of trees, flowing down the hillside towards the sea - will know they were right.

The following are three of my favorites:Santiago de Compostela, in northern Spain, at night when "tunas" (groups of costumed musicians from the university) play medieval music on the cathedral plaza.
The miniature village in Portugal dos Pequenitos Parque in Coimbra. The park contains reproductions of typical houses and shops as well as the most important buildings in the country. While the village itself is worth a visit, watching the children explore the buildings makes the experience priceless.
While the Forum ruins are a must-see, the unexpected pleasures discovered while meandering -- such as the Street of the Carpenters and the wholesale flower market -- are among Rome's most important treasures.

So far, I agree with everyone! I had forgotten the charming Portugal dos Pequenitos Parque in Coimbra.
So many places I'd love to return to see again -- and so many new ones to explore...
